IT blind spots: the risk no antivirus can detect
Are you sure your IT team knows all the devices that currently pose a risk to the company? When an organization suffers a cybersecurity incident, the first question is usually how they managed to get in. IT blind spots are the answer that rarely surprises specialists.
An unpatched server. A laptop that hadn’t connected to the corporate network for months. A remote worker’s computer that never received the latest security policies. A device nobody knew was still active. The problem is not always a critical vulnerability. The real problem is not knowing that vulnerability exists.
Today, the biggest threat to many organizations is not a ransomware, malware, or a highly sophisticated attacker. It is the lack of visibility into their own technological infrastructure, creating dangerous IT blind spots.
The false sense of security regarding IT blind spots
Many companies consider themselves protected because they have corporate antivirus, next-generation firewalls, Microsoft 365, backups, and Windows Update enabled. All these tools are important. However, none of them answer a question every IT manager should be able to answer in under a minute: How many devices in my organization are truly protected right now?
And more importantly: How many computers are unmanaged? How many have critical vulnerabilities? How many have gone weeks without applying updates? How many users work from devices outside IT control?
If these answers aren’t available through a centralized dashboard, the organization has IT blind spots. And attackers know how to exploit them.
The attack surface is no longer just in the office
A few years ago, it was enough to protect the company perimeter. Today the reality is entirely different. Users work from home, travel, use public networks, access from mobile devices, and consume cloud applications.
Every laptop, server, workstation, or remote device represents a new entry point for an attacker. The more devices that exist without centralized management, the larger the attack surface. That’s why the most mature organizations no longer focus their strategy solely on blocking threats. Their priority is continuous visibility of all tech assets. Because you can’t protect what you don’t know.
The silent enemy: invisible devices
In almost all companies, there are computers that have fallen off the IT department’s radar. It could be equipment assigned to remote staff, laptops used by consultants or vendors, old equipment never decommissioned, computers that stopped reporting information, or devices with outdated software.
These assets often go unnoticed for months. Until an incident occurs. At that point, discovering a computer went 90 days without an update is no longer useful.
The cost of lacking visibility
When an organization doesn’t know the real status of its endpoints, risks increase considerably. Not just technically, but also regarding business continuity.
Consequences can include operational disruption, loss of critical information, credential theft, regulatory non-compliance, incident recovery costs, and reputational damage. In most cases, the incident could have been avoided if the vulnerable device had been identified in time.
Five questions every IT manager should be able to answer
- Do you know exactly how many devices are connected to the company infrastructure? An exact number.
- Can you identify in under five minutes which computers have pending critical vulnerabilities?
- Do you know which devices haven’t connected or received security policies for over 30 days?
- Do all endpoints have the same level of protection?
- If an incident occurs tomorrow, would your team know exactly which device was compromised and how to respond?
Answering yes to these questions means the organization has a higher level of cybersecurity maturity. Answering “no” to any of them represents an opportunity for improvement.
How Endpoint Management helps eliminate IT blind spots
A modern Endpoint Management platform isn’t limited to distributing updates. Its true value lies in providing control and visibility over all organization devices. Benefits like automatic inventory, centralized management, and real-time reporting effectively eliminate IT blind spots.
